Work Out Mentally Every Day

By Michelle Sine, CFO, MSBO Board Member, Associate Superintendent of Business & Operations, Charlotte Public Schools

In The Coffee Bean, Jon Gordon encourages us to “work out mentally every day,” reminding us that we are not only shaped by what we eat, but also by what we consume with our minds. Every book we read, website we visit, social media account we follow, show we watch, and conversation we engage in feeds us—either with positivity or negativity.

This idea resonated with me deeply after a recent vacation. While it wasn’t completely free of work, I made a conscious decision to step away from social media, avoid the constant pull of the news, and instead focus on being present with my family. The impact was immediate and powerful. I felt a weight lift—not the weight of responsibilities or workload, but the quieter, often unnoticed burden created by the constant “noise” around us.

What struck me most was how subtle that weight had become. It wasn’t something I could easily point to day-to-day, but once it was gone, the difference was undeniable. My thoughts felt clearer. My patience stretched further. I found myself more engaged in conversations, more appreciative of small moments, and less distracted by things that ultimately don’t add value to my life. It made me realize how much of our mental energy is quietly consumed by habits we rarely question.

It also reinforced the importance of being intentional. Just as we might plan a workout or make thoughtful choices about what we eat, we should consider creating space for mental renewal. That might look like starting the day without immediately reaching for a phone, choosing to read something uplifting, spending time outdoors (now that Mother Nature is starting to cooperate for us fair weather folks), or simply allowing ourselves moments of quiet without stimulation. These small shifts can compound in meaningful ways.

Equally important is the company we keep—both physically and digitally. The people we surround ourselves with influence our mindset more than we often realize. Encouraging conversations, supportive relationships, and authentic connections can energize us.  So, make connections with colleagues and rely on your MSBO family when you need assistance or when you want to celebrate a success.  This is what our community is about.  Our work is not easy or stress free, but we have each other to lean on.

Spring has a way of inviting renewal. It offers a natural opportunity to reset, refocus, and be more intentional about what we allow into our lives. Just as we might clean out a closet that has been collecting items all winter or open windows to let in fresh air (YES!), we can also clear space in our minds—letting go of what no longer serves us and making room for what brings clarity, purpose, and peace.

As this new season begins, consider what a “mental reset” might look like for you. Maybe it’s limiting certain inputs, reconnecting with people who ground you, or carving out time for reflection. Even small changes can create a noticeable shift. My hope is that you find something that brings you a sense of joy and calm—and that you carry a little less of the weight the world so easily places on us.
