“Seasons of Leadership: Gratitude in Transition”

By Julie Williams-Muz, M.Ed, CPA, CFO, MSBO Board President, Finance Director, Bay-Arenac ISD

Every season has a rhythm—a beginning full of energy, a middle of steady work, and an ending that reminds us how time keeps moving. As I near the closing season of my presidency, I’ve been reflecting on what it means to lead through transitions—with gratitude, humility, and faith in what comes next.

Leadership, at its heart, isn’t about holding on—it’s about building something worth passing on. When I first stepped into this role, I felt the weight and excitement of possibility. Now, as this chapter turns, I feel something different but equally meaningful: gratitude. Gratitude for the people I’ve served with, for the lessons learned through both challenges and triumphs, and for the growth that can only come when we stretch beyond what’s comfortable.

Jon Gordon often writes about the power of optimism and belief—that great teams and great leaders are fueled by positive energy and shared purpose. I’ve seen that truth play out here at MSBO. Every board member, staff member, and volunteer contributes to something larger than any single role or title. Together, we’ve kept moving forward, even through change.

Still, change brings emotion. It’s never easy to see valued colleagues move on or step away. Our current Immediate Past President will conclude her time on the board soon, and I already know how much her presence and friendship will be missed. It reminds me that our connections don’t end when our titles do—they simply shift. We carry those relationships with us, sometimes in new ways, always with appreciation.

This season of transition is one of reflection but also renewal. I look toward the next generation of leadership with confidence, knowing that what’s been built here is grounded in integrity, passion, and purpose. As I prepare to step into my upcoming role as Immediate Past President, I hope to be a bridge—a connector between where we’ve been and where we’re going.

Gratitude doesn’t just soften endings—it transforms them. It helps us see that each conclusion is also a continuation of the good we’ve done together.
