By Julie Omer, MBA, CPA, CFO, MSBO Board President, Chief Financial Officer, Owosso Public Schools
As some of you may remember that attended the closing session for the annual conference, my “presidential theme” for the year is “making a difference.” Given the recent announcement of David Martell’s retirement from MSBO effective June 30, 2023, it seems appropriate to start off the first article of the school year recognizing what a difference David has made to the MSBO organization.
David’s talents in making a difference to the MSBO organization are reflected in his enhancement of communications, program development, products and services, non-dues support for the organization, increase in membership and overall organization streamlining under his leadership as Executive Director.
In addition, David was able navigate MSBO through the challenging pandemic waters and having it emerge even stronger and better than it was before. All of these endeavors could not have been accomplished without David’s utmost dedication to making MSBO the best that it could possibly be while making a difference to the profession of school business officials.
David’s commitment to the profession and advocating for professional organizations has moved beyond the confines of the state to international leadership through his role of representing MSBO and taking on leadership roles at ASBO.
In a recent nomination letter from David Lewis, Executive Director of ASBO, David Lewis said “David is highly respected by other association executives because of his true belief in providing services to our members. David has clearly demonstrated his commitment to our profession of association management through his consistent attendance, participation, and sincere sharing of his wealth of information and guidance when it comes to leading ASBO’s”. As already indicated in this newsletter, David did receive the distinguished MSAE’s Association Executive Director of the Year award.
David’s story certainly is not over yet, as he has many more opportunities to “make a difference” to MSBO and beyond in the coming year. However, I want to take this opportunity to thank and congratulate David for all that he has done to make MSBO an association of excellence and congratulate him on his distinguished award. A recognition of his legacy that will continue beyond his tenure of Executive Director of MSBO.
