Endings That Begin Again

By Julie Williams-Muz, M.Ed, CPA, CFO, MSBO Board President, Finance Director, Bay-Arenac ISD

As I prepare to step onto the stage at the MSBO Annual Conference one last time as President, I find myself reflecting on the quiet weight of endings. There’s something profoundly human about reaching the conclusion of something you’ve poured your energy, heart, and time into—the satisfaction of completing the work, but also the ache that comes with letting go.

Leadership, like life, is a series of chapters. We turn the page not because we’ve run out of story, but because a new one is waiting to be written. Still, it can be hard to close a page that’s meant so much. This organization, this board, and this community have shaped me in ways I could never have predicted. The friendships, the laughter, even the challenges—they’ve all become part of who I am.

Jon Gordon often reminds us that endings don’t mean the journey is over—they simply signal transformation. The best leaders, he says, understand that their true legacy isn’t in the role they hold but in the people, culture, and spirit they leave behind. As I prepare to pass the gavel, that message has never felt truer.

This year’s gavel exchange will be more than ceremony—it’s a reflection of trust. Trust in the strength of our organization, in new leadership ready to guide MSBO forward, and in the enduring community that connects us all. While I’ll soon take on a different seat at the table, I carry with me the lasting friendships, laughter, and lessons that have shaped this experience beyond measure.

Transitions like this remind me of other moments in life when we must release what we’ve cherished: watching a child leave home, finishing a chapter of a career, or stepping back from something that has defined us for years. In each, we’re invited to grow again—to see ourselves not by what we were doing, but by who we’ve become through it.

As members of MSBO, we each know the power of collective effort—the quiet, consistent work that makes schools and communities thrive. I am deeply grateful to have served alongside so many capable, dedicated professionals who embody that spirit every day.

I want to thank the MSBO membership for giving me the opportunity to serve on this board so many years ago. That trust and support have been among the greatest honors of my career. Every conversation, every challenge, and every shared success has strengthened my belief in what we can accomplish together.

As I hand over the gavel, I do so with gratitude for what has been and optimism for what’s next.
