My first real job was at McDonald’s. I was 16 years old. When I reflect on my career through the rearview mirror, some behaviors have stood out as having been essential ways to conduct myself as I strive to become a successful and valued professional.
- Be humble
- Be honest
- Be on time for work
- Don’t leave early
- Work hard — whether your boss is there or not
- Work conscientiously
- Do things right
- Do the right things
- Nothing is beneath you
- Be observant of those around you – help when they need it
- Keep notes
- Keep organized
- Quickly adapt to changes in plans
- Be consistent
- Only be told once
- Anticipate what is needed, not just what is asked for
- Know when you don’t know
- Ask questions until you understand
- Be curious
- Navigate ambiguity
- Figure it out
- Self-reflect
- Take feedback as informative and learn from it
- Build relationships
- Be a lifelong learner
- Pursue a terminal degree
- Be loyal
- The grass is not greener — there are issues, just different ones
- You can eat an elephant – one bite at a time
- Become the best from all those you have learned from
- Inspire others
