As the end of another calendar year approaches, I find myself reflecting on the year that has passed. Was it a good year? A year of struggles? A year of opportunity and growth? My answer to those questions often changes depending on the day I decide to take a look in the rearview mirror. In fact, I tend to look back more than once—there’s always a lot to review!
I usually begin by evaluating the goals I set for myself. Did I make progress? How do I feel about the strides I made? Reflecting on the year, whether it was filled with challenges or celebrations, feels rewarding. However, one important lesson I’ve learned is not to linger too long in the past. I don’t live there; the past is behind me for a reason—whether it brought joy or difficulty.
When reflecting beyond my goals, I ask myself a few key questions:
- What went really well?
- What went wrong?
- What did I learn?
- What do I not want to repeat?
I document my answers in a simple list rather than lengthy paragraphs. This practice allows me to acknowledge the events of the past year and brings closure to any lingering negative thoughts or feelings. For me, it’s a way to recognize and release the past so that I don’t carry its weight into the new year.
Once I finish looking back, I turn my focus forward—to the windshield. To help me move ahead personally and professionally, I set goals for the upcoming year. About 12 years ago, I was introduced to the SMART goals framework, and I’ve been using it ever since. SMART goals help me refine my objectives and ensure they are realistic and attainable.
What about you? Do you have a practice of reflection at the end of the year? If not, would you consider starting one? Reflecting on the past and planning for the future can be powerful tools for growth. To learn more about SMART goals, a quick internet search will provide you with many helpful resources. If you’d like my personal template, feel free to email me, and I’d be happy to share it.
Wishing you a joyful and warm holiday season!
