By Michelle Sine, CFO, MSBO Board, Associate Superintendent of Business and Operations, Charlotte Public Schools
Receiving the MSBO School Business Official of the Year was truly an honor and a humbling experience. It served not only as recognition for my efforts but also as a reminder of the amazing community of individuals who inspire and motivate one another every day. Awards like this highlight the hard work, passion, and dedication that often go unnoticed.
Reflecting on the experience, I realize how impactful it was—not just for me but for my team that works extremely hard beside me every day. It also provided necessary recognition for my family and mentors that have, and continue to, support me. It reinforced my commitment to continue striving for excellence and gave me the encouragement to aim even higher. I still may not be “comfortable” with that type of individual recognition but I have come to appreciate the other meanings and benefits behind it. For that, I am still very grateful.
So, I wanted to strongly encourage you to think about the exceptional people around you who deserve to be recognized. Whether it’s a colleague, mentor, or peer, nominating someone is a meaningful way to celebrate their contributions and amplify their impact. Showing appreciation and celebrating successes are sometimes after thoughts as we grind through each day. Let’s take the time to uplift and honor those who inspire us through their dedication, innovation, and resilience.
There are several opportunities to recognize the people around you. From something as simple as a handwritten note, or a random act of kindness, to a formal award nomination. MSBO offers three annual awards by nomination: School Business Official of the Year, Distinguished Service Award, and Meridian Award of Excellence. You can learn more on the MSBO website (https://www.msbo.org/about/awards/). Just remember, applications are due by January 31, 2025. Nominate someone today—you never know how much this recognition could mean to them.
