The Heart of Service: Honoring David’s Legacy

By Julie Williams-Muz, M.Ed, CPA, CFO, MSBO Board President, Finance Director, Bay-Arenac ISD

This month, our organization finds itself reflecting deeply on the life and legacy of someone who helped shape MSBO into what it is today. With the passing of our former Executive Director, David Martell, we are reminded of how much one person’s commitment, heart, and vision can influence an entire profession.

When someone like David leaves us, it makes you think about the kind of work that truly lasts. The kind that isn’t captured only in job titles or the number of projects completed, but in the lives touched, the confidence built, and the doors opened for others along the way.

David embodied that kind of lasting impact.

Throughout his career, David invested in people. He mentored new school business officials, guided seasoned professionals through challenges, and strengthened MSBO by believing in its members. He didn’t just lead the organization—he built relationships, created opportunities, and made sure that MSBO stayed grounded in service and professionalism.

And there was one thing that was absolutely certain about David: he loved his family, and he loved MSBO. You could feel that in the way he talked about the work, the pride he had in the organization’s growth, and the care he showed to the people who make up this community.  David was extremely proud of his family and would often share stories of their travels together.

As we look ahead, I hope we honor David by continuing to uplift one another, to mentor with intention, and to serve with purpose. The greatest tribute we can offer is to keep building on the foundation he helped lay—one rooted in integrity, collaboration, and a shared commitment to supporting Michigan’s schools.

As many of you know, I often lean on the words of Jon Gordon for inspiration. This month, one quote stood out:

“Legacy is built day by day, choice by choice, through the lives we touch.” — Jon Gordon

David built his legacy one person at a time—and we are all better because of it.

May we carry forward that same spirit as we continue the work he cared so deeply about.
