MSBO: Better Together – Julie Williams-Muz

By Julie Williams-Muz, M.Ed, CPA, CFO, MSBO Board President, Finance Director, Bay-Arenac ISD

Following are comments given by MSBO Board President Julie Williams-Muz at MSBO’s Annual Business Meeting held at the 2025 MSBO Annual Conference.

Together, we create a powerful collective voice that can drive change and make a meaningful impact in our educational communities. Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to work with incredible teams as well as some of our amazing exhibitors who have helped me accomplish some truly remarkable work.

I’ve learned so much from the individuals around me, and I am committed to continuing to foster an environment where every voice is heard, and every perspective is valued. That is what makes us stronger — when we listen, share, and collaborate.

Staff transitions are happening more frequently, making it increasingly difficult to quickly train and onboard new personnel. With these shifts, it’s crucial that we focus on providing professional development opportunities that reinforce the foundations of our work. In many ways, we need to return to the basics, ensuring that all members, new and seasoned alike, are equipped with the core knowledge and skills necessary to excel in our ever-evolving roles. This approach will not only help us stay resilient through these transitions but will also ensure that the integrity and excellence of our work is maintained.

I am excited to lead MSBO into a year of growth and opportunity.  We will focus on enhancing professional development, making sure that every member has the resources and support needed to thrive in their roles. We will continue to invest in opportunities for networking, education, and training, so that we all can rise together.

One of the most powerful ways we can grow as an organization is through volunteering. Our committees, task forces, and regional groups are a vital part of MSBO, and I encourage each of you to become more involved. There is so much to gain from stepping up, learning from others, and sharing your expertise.  The more we engage with each other, the more we learn, the better we become.

The work we do is incredibly rewarding, but it is not without its challenges. There are times when the weight of our responsibilities feels heavy.  We need to remember that it’s okay to ask for help.  We are BETTER TOGETHER, and we need to take care of one another — whether that means offering a listening ear, sharing a resource, or simply reminding someone they are not alone.  Together, we can continue to support one another through the challenges that come our way.

As we move forward, I will make it a priority to ensure that every voice within MSBO is heard. Whether you are a seasoned professional or a new member, your experiences and insights matter.  We will continue to foster a culture where collaboration is at the heart of everything we do. Whether through regional groups, task forces, or one-on-one connections, the collective strength of MSBO is found in its people — and in our ability to work together toward a shared vision.

I want to acknowledge my family — my husband, my children, and my friends — whose love and support have made everything possible. When my husband and I first met, we connected over our love for the musician Jack Johnson.  His song better together quickly became one of our favorites.

To my colleagues at Bay-Arenac ISD, thank you for embracing me with open arms. I’m honored to work alongside such a talented team. To my department, Michael, Kim, Mary, Lorrie, Denise and Celena — we have a great thing going, and I am so proud of each of you.  And to my MSBO family, thank you for entrusting me with this responsibility. I look forward to what we will achieve together.

This year, we will continue to build on the strong foundation laid by those who came before us. Together, we will face challenges, celebrate victories, and support each other through it all.

We are better together. And together, there is nothing we cannot accomplish.
