By Julie Williams-Muz, M.Ed, CPA, CFO, MSBO Board President, Finance Director, Bay-Arenac ISD
As we approach the end of the year, I want to take a moment to pause with you — not just to mark deadlines or wrap up projects, but to reflect on what this community continues to demonstrate every single day.
This year has brought its share of complexity. School business officials across Michigan have navigated shifting expectations, rising pressures, and the ongoing challenge of balancing what our districts need with the resources available. Yet through all of it, one thing has remained consistent: the strength and professionalism of MSBO members.
From large ISDs to small rural districts, I’ve witnessed an unwavering commitment to doing what’s right for students, staff, and communities. You show up. You problem-solve. You steady the ship during times when it would be easier to step back. That dedication is what makes this profession not only impactful, but inspiring.
As I reflect on the many conversations, meetings, workshops, and informal moments shared this year, one theme stands out: we are better because we have each other. MSBO is strongest when our members connect, share ideas, lean on one another, and take pride in the collective knowledge we bring to Michigan’s schools. Our community is far more than a professional network — it’s a support system built on respect, trust, and shared purpose.
Looking ahead, my hope is that we carry that spirit with us. Not through a list of initiatives or directives, but through the simple and powerful reminder that our influence grows when we lift each other up. When we offer guidance. When we extend grace. When we choose collaboration over isolation.
As we head into a new year, I encourage you to give yourself permission to recharge and reflect. Celebrate what you’ve accomplished. Acknowledge the obstacles you moved through — even if quietly. And remember that your work is felt far beyond your office walls.
I’m grateful for this community and honored to serve alongside so many dedicated professionals. MSBO’s strength has always come from its people — and this year reaffirmed that truth in every way.
I’ll leave you with a line from leadership author Jon Gordon that perfectly captures the heart of our work: “Great leaders don’t succeed because they are great. They succeed because they bring out the greatness in others.”
Thank you for being that kind of leader — for your district, for your colleagues, and for MSBO.
Wishing you rest, renewal, and a strong start to the year ahead.
