Raise your hand if you are using a software system to help you do your job. Now, raise your hand if you are using all of the modules available within the system. If you are one of the few using every option, every bell and whistle available within your software system, I applaud you! For the rest of us, why are we not using all of the various modules within the software? Let’s explore the reasons…
WE ARE TOO BUSY TO IMPLEMENT A NEW PROCESS
Yes, we are all very busy. We have all heard the phrase “doing more with less”, and we are all living the phrase every day. As budgets have tightened, our offices have become lean. With those reductions, we are asked to take on more work with the expectation of business continuing as normal. We have the software handling the basic aspects of our work but have not explored any new modules. How could we possibly implement a new process while we are so busy maintaining our old processes?
WE LOVE OUR SPREADSHEETS
We have all been guilty of loving our spreadsheets too much. We created them, and they are artful masterpieces. We don’t trust a software system to create our budget because our spreadsheet system works! We cannot possibly use the Human Resource software to manage our employees, I can track them in my Access database much easier! Whatever the process, we do love our spreadsheets and have a hard time trusting a software system to create efficiencies.
CHANGE IS SCARY
With so many changes happening every day in school business, it is nice to be able to rely on our tried and true processes (aka spreadsheets) that have not changed in years. Let’s call it our security blanket, it is a nice comfortable spot to come back to each day.
While this list is not all inclusive, and all of the reasons listed are valid, it seems that we are selling ourselves short if we do not push ourselves to change and evolve. My challenge to all of us is to take a look at your software (new or old) and identify options within the software that you can implement to make your work more efficient. Yes, it may mean giving up the spreadsheet that you have used forever, and no longer being able to say….” that is how we have always done it”.
