Happy New Year! I’m sure you realize that January 1st marks the half-way point of our fiscal year. Easy peazy from here on out, right? Well, no. In my office we are preparing W2’s and 1099’s. We are figuring out how to help our staff with the new W4 form. We’re preparing our 3rd quarter budget amendment and we are gearing up for our 2020-21 budget. We will negotiate with all three of our bargaining units this spring. Throw in excess cost reporting, bidding our health insurance, nearly 20% of our teaching staff planning to retire, and various other tasks and we are as busy as we’ve ever been. My guess is that your to-do list looks pretty similar.
So, there is nothing easy about the second half of the fiscal year. What can you do? What am I doing? I’m working my tail off. But, I’m also trying to eat better and I joined Weight Watchers. My wife and I decided that we need to get outdoors in the winter, so we got snowshoes for Christmas. We haven’t used them yet but hope springs eternal.
We also got an Australian Shepherd puppy in addition to our 65-pound Labradoodle. Also, the new puppy is deaf. I don’t recommend this for everyone, but it is sure keeping me moving. In short, I’m trying to take care of myself so that I can take care of everything else, including work.
Your MSBO “to-do” list could include taking the time to read the MSBO Board of Director’s election candidate profiles. They are posted on the MSBO website. Then registering for the MSBO Annual Conference and Exhibit Show in early February when the Early Bird registration opens. And rounding out the top three spots of your MSBO “to-do” list will hopefully include filling out the MSBO membership survey in March. The MSBO board and staff analyze survey results and develop programming and benefits based on your responses. It is an important tool for MSBO.
So, take care of that lengthy to-do list but take care of yourself too. Have a great new year!
