Congratulations to MSBO members who have received national recognition from the Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO) this year. Hats off to Muskegon Area Intermediate School District Deputy Superintendent Marios Demetriou, Lake Orion Community Schools Assistant Superintendent of Business and Finance John D. Fitzgerald, and Bad Axe Public School District Business Manager Melodie A. Kociba. Learn more about their awards:
2013 Distinguished Eagle Award
Marios Demetriou, CFO, Deputy Superintendent, Muskegon Area ISD was named one of four finalists for the 2013 International Eagle Award. This is the highest honor ASBO bestows on its members that have exhibited outstanding and visionary leadership in school business management.
He is being recognized for providing exemplary service to the Muskegon Area ISD and local districts, as well as his leadership as interim Chief Financial Officer of Muskegon Heights Public School District. Marios assisted the district and the governor-appointed financial review team through its investigations and recommendation to appoint an emergency financial manager.
Demetriou, who received the Michigan School Business Official of the Year award in April, traveled (all expenses paid) to Virginia for an individual interview for the Eagle Award on July 30, 2013. He received a college scholarship check to be given to the high school student of his choice. In addition, he will also receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the 2014 ASBO International's Eagle Institute in Washington D.C. The four-day Institute is an exclusive conference that examines the challenges school business officials face, the academic and philosophical concepts of leadership, and insights from history.
As the 2013 Michigan School Business Official of the Year, Marios has already received a $1,500 professional development scholarship to attend the ASBO annual conference, in Boston, Massachusetts later this year.
2013 Pinnacle Award Winner
Each year, the four Pinnacle Awards recognize the outstanding practices and new ideas that result in significant contributions to school entities or the profession of school business management.
John D. Fitzgerald, CMA, CFM, CFO, Assistant Superintendent of Business and Finance
Lake Orion Community Schools received the Pinnacle Award for his district’s program - BusSTAR (Supporting Teaching by Assisting in Reading).
The BusStar (Supporting Teaching by Assisting in Reading) program invites school bus drivers to contribute to the education of the district's students for one hour a week--typically between their morning and afternoon routes. The bus drivers provide instructional support in the schools and classrooms on a volunteer basis. Many bus drivers also incorporate learning activities on the buses--during idle times as buses are loading and unloading.
2013 Bridges to the Future
Each year, ASBO International and MetLife award scholarships to new and aspiring school business professionals so they can take advantage of professional development opportunities at ASBO International's Annual Meeting & Expo.
Let's welcome the 2013 Bridge to the Future scholarship recipients to the school business profession! This year’s Michigan recipient is Melodie A. Kociba, CPA, Bad Axe Public School District.
